Across the UK, universities continue to bank with institutions financing fossil fuel expansion, including Barclays, HSBC and Lloyds. SB4S is a student-led campaign organising students to move our accounts and our universities’ money away from banks profiting from climate breakdown.

WHY UNIVERSITY BANKING MATTERS

It's time for Universities to ditch banks financing fossil fuel expansion.

Universities cannot claim climate leadership while banking with institutions financing the expansion of fossil fuels.

In 2025 alone, the world’s 65 largest banks provided £377.6 billion to companies and projects expanding the fossil fuel industry. Yet universities across the UK continue to bank with some of its biggest financiers.

Students have the collective power to change that. By pushing universities to move their money, we can help establish a new norm: institutions committed to tackling climate change should not directly or indirectly finance its acceleration.

IGNORE THE PROMISES

A "green" office does not make a green bank.

Banks are quick to point to net zero targets and operational emissions commitments. But those promises mean little if they continue financing companies and projects expanding fossil fuel production.

WHY YOUR BANK ACCOUNT MATTERS

Your bank account is not sitting still.

Banks do not just hold your money.

Your deposits become part of a much larger financial system. Banks combine deposits with their own capital and other funding to finance homes, businesses and infrastructure, but also oil fields, gas projects and companies expanding fossil fuel production.

Where you bank helps determine what that financial system supports.

That is why switching matters.

UCL Banking Campaign Article

The SB4S started at UCL, within the Sustainability Council. The Banking Task Force is thus the first campaign chapter in the UK. In addition to helping create resources for the SB4S national campaign, we have thus far taken several actions to make UCL more financially sustainable.
